Svadhisthana - Sacral Chakra

The second week is all about Svadhisthana. Our Sacral chakra is located just above the pubic bone, below the navel (under the belly button) and governs our self-expression, our creativity and reproduction: the nurturing and creative side of us. It is the centre of emotions, desire and sexuality.

The name comes from the Sanskrit sva, meaning “one’s own," and adisthana, meaning “home” or “dwelling place."

You probably heard me talking about the element of water and how it's connected to the second chakra, which equals cohesiveness. A balanced second chakra leads to feelings of self-worth, wellness, abundance, pleasure, and joy. When this chakra is out of balance, a person may experience emotional instability, fear of change, sexual dysfunction, depression, or addictions.

Now let's put all this into examples.

If your sacral chakra is in balance you are connected to your emotions and inner creativity, you express yourself and your sexuality freely. If the chakra is out of balance or under working you are sacrifice your happiness for others, because we know you have to take care of yourself first to be able to take care of others. If the chakra is overworking or too fuelled someone takes pleasure for the pleasure's sake, you push yourself in front of everyone.

If you think you are in tune with your Svadhisthana or being governed by Water , you'd live your life through emotions, and you'd take everything to heart, meaning you FEEL a lot and sometimes without knowing why.

How would you work on your sacral chakra?
Meditate- Whether you focus your attention :

  • down below the navel where Svadhistana resides.

  • focusing on your sense of taste. The sense organ that corresponds to the second chakra is taste, although I am aware that the sense of taste can be affected, by so many things. But have you ever felt that your taste is off? (and no not because of Covid:)) But there are times when everything feels too salty, bitter, sour, tastes off -this can indicate imbalance of the chakra too. As we know what happens in our mind/life can TRULY affect our physical body and senses too. Also you can just think of pregnancy: your taste can be effected and change throughout the 40 weeks. Pregnancy=reproduction=sacralchakra=ovaries/testes (the main glands of the chakra)

Reflect. I believe in the power of reflecting on our thoughts. Maybe take a few minutes of meditation/ breathwork and channel your attention to a few questions:

  • - How do I feel? Am I connected to my emotions?

  • - Do I express myself (including sexuality) truly and freely?

  • Finally you may repeat mantras to yourself to bring balance and change: "I am creative. I am in touch with my feelings. I enjoy and live my sexuality in a natural way. I respect my needs and the needs of others"

  • or repeat the bijou sound of the chakra: VAM (just like you would do OM)

  • If you want to work on Svahisthasana then practice asanas that involve movement in the hips and lower abdomen. Lizard, Frog, Dragonfly, Goddess etc

Let me know what do you think and maybe bring out your long forgotten hobbies and be creative!
